Seeing Through Union-Busting Organizations

In recent weeks, SSEU Local 371 members have reported receiving correspondence encouraging them to opt out of the union from a group called the Freedom Foundation. This organization has also targeted members of District Council 37 (DC 37) and other unions nationwide with the same objective: to convince workers to abandon their unions.

Who Is the Freedom Foundation?

The Freedom Foundation presents itself as a think tank or, as they prefer, an “action tank.” But don’t be deceived. This organization is not an advocate for the greater good. It is funded by conservative billionaires with a shared agenda to undermine labor unions and the public-sector workforce. Their ultimate goals include ending public-sector pensions, halting wage increases, and silencing the collective voice of union members across the nation. In essence, they aim to dismantle unions entirely.

In a January 28, 2018 Los Angeles Times article titled “Group Funded by Conservative Billionaires Launches Anti-Union Campaign Following Supreme Court Ruling,” Bob Schoonover, a union official, stated, “They’re really not advocating for the employees at all — they’re advocating for unions to lose their power. They want to silence the working class. It just so happens that unions are the ones that stick up for the working class — whether we represent them or not.” While this sentiment is accurate, it hasn’t stopped the Freedom Foundation from sending thousands of mailers to union members, attempting to mislead the uninformed into thinking it’s beneficial to opt out of the union. Thankfully, our informed members have not fallen for their deceptive tactics.

Why Sticking with Your Union Is the Best Option

The adage “power in numbers” aptly describes the strength of the Social Service Employees Union Local 371, DC 37, AFSCME, and our sister unions nationwide. The Freedom Foundation and similar organizations know this, which is why they aim to dismantle us. There is no evidence that these groups have ever improved the lives of public-sector working-class individuals or their families. By contrast, unions have delivered countless tangible benefits.

For instance, during our last round of bargaining, DC 37 distributed a questionnaire to its 150,000 members to gather feedback on priorities. Members wanted fair raises, zero-cost healthcare, and remote work options. Under the leadership of Executive Director Henry Garrido, the union delivered on all counts, even securing remote work despite initial resistance from Mayor Adams. The Freedom Foundation’s interests are not aligned with yours. Unions strive to expand and improve member benefits, while the Freedom Foundation seeks to eliminate them entirely.

What Are My Dues Used For?

Union dues fund the essential operations of the union, including negotiation preparation, member representation, office expenses, and more. Transparency is a cornerstone of our operations—the union’s award-winning Unionist publication includes annual and semi-annual audits detailing how every dollar is spent. Members can also contact Vincent Ciccarello, Secretary Treasurer, or Andrea Walters, Associate Secretary Treasurer, with any questions.

Union-busting groups often claim that opting out of the union will save you money. But consider this: just as your paycheck funds your household’s essential operations—such as rent, food, and childcare—union dues sustain the union’s ability to fight for fair wages, benefits, and working conditions. Opting out jeopardizes these protections, ultimately harming the collective good.

Staying Informed and Involved in Your Union

Poet Samuel Johnson said, “Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information upon it.” Staying informed about union issues and the tactics of organizations like the Freedom Foundation is essential. Visit mightyunion.org and read the Unionist to stay updated.

The Freedom Foundation is not a friend to labor or the working class. Their goal is to financially cripple unions, leading to their eventual demise. Meanwhile, workers at companies like Starbucks and Amazon are fighting to gain the same union protections we already enjoy. President Wells often reminds us, “The union’s job is to get the most for you, while management’s job is to get the most out of you.” Stay encouraged, informed, and involved. Remember, the union is you!
