From the Memphis sanitation strike to the struggle against South African apartheid, William “Bill” Lucy never stopped fighting for justice. Lucy, who died at the age of 90 last week, served as AFSCME secretary-treasurer for 38 years. As the co-founder of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, he was one of the nation’s leading voices for racial equity in the labor movement. He was a great labor leader, but he was more than that – he was a global human rights icon. The impact of his work will be felt for generations to come.
