We’re fighting for vaccine priority for SSEU Local 371 members

Monday 11 January 2021

Jan 11 -  President Wells is campaigning hard for our members who interact with the public to be among the next wave of New Yorkers given priority in receiving the Covid-19 vaccine. It is only right and fair for these essential workers protecting our most vulnerable citizens to be themselves protected.

Eligibility for the Covid vaccine is determined by the state, and Governor Cuomo announced last week that those in “Group 1B” can begin scheduling vaccinations as early as today, Jan. 11. Group 1B includes those 75 and over, as well as certain workers, including first responders and those in education, public safety and public transit.

President Wells applauds the opening of new vaccination sites including 24-hour hubs, and we salute the volunteers who staff these sites. The union welcomes the expansion of vaccination to more workers.

This effort must be expanded to include our members, however. Many of them do critical work like investigating reports of child and elder abuse, staffing homeless and domestic violence shelters, running job centers, among many other tasks.

Make no mistake: without these workers, our city’s most important social services would grind to an immediate halt. SSEU Local 371 is working with District Council 37, the Municipal Labor Committee and many other groups to demand that our members be protected.

Stay safe and thank you for the great work that you do.

In solidarity,

President Anthony Wells and the officers and staff of SSEU Local 371
